RELEVANCE AND BENEFITS OF WORKPLACECOUNSELLING IN MICRO, SMALL AND MEDIUM SIZED BUSINESS IN YENAGOA, BAYELSA STATE

This study investigated the relevance and benefits of guidance and counselling in micro, small and medium-size enterprises (MSMEs) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The study used the descriptive survey design. Two research questions were raised to guide the study. The population consisted of 670 MSMEs of which the simple random sampling technique was used to randomly select 288 participants for the study. A selfdesigned reliable (r=.78) questionnaire titled “micro, small and medium-size enterprises questionnaire (MSMEQ) was used to collect data for the data. Data were analysed using descriptive method of data analysisembodying frequency counts and simple percentages. Results from the study showed that MSMEs in Yenagoa held the perception that counselling is not relevant to their business survival and success.
However, MSMEs in Yenagoa fully comprehend the benefit of counselling to a business. On that note, it was recommended that professional counsellors should make themselves available to MSMEs in Yenagoa to showcase the importance of counselling.
